Due to popular demand (okay, one person asked), here is my list of podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis. (What is a
podcast? Click the link for a more detailed definition, but in short it’s an audio file that is automatically downloaded to your computer whenever it is updated.)
In general, I don’t tend to listen to podcasts that are updated daily. I just don’t have the time to keep up with them. I don’t have a daily commute and I don’t find myself driving to see Melanie anymore. And I generally don’t listen to them at my computer while I’m working because I have a hard time concentrating on what someone’s saying while also trying to read and/or write. Unfortunately, not listening to daily podcasts rules out Vatican Radio and Mark Shea’s Rock Solid.
Anyway, here are my faves:
- Fr. Roderick Vonhogen’s Catholic Insider, which he has branched out to include something called the Daily Breakfast (a daily podcast, argh!), the Catholic Minute video podcast, a Harry Potter series I’m not interested in, and other occasional ‘casts. Fr. Vonhogen, a Dutch priest, is probably the big gun among Catholic podcasters, starting early and getting a very big audience.
- Command-N, a video podcast about computers and technology produced in Canada
- Tips from the Top Floor, a digital photography podcast from Germany
- EatFeed, a food podcast that says of itself: “The podcast that takes you back in time, across the country, around the world, and back to your own table.”
- Grape Radio, A wine podcast by three wine geeks who interview people involved in wine from around the world, including some very big names. Always informative and fun, it’s raised my wine appreciation a few levels since I started listening.
- Battlestar Galactica, by the executive producer of the show who makes a DVD-commentary-like podcast for each episode.
- The Official Lost Podcast, also by the producers of the TV show.
- This Week in Tech, a weekly group podcast by the guys who used to host Tech TV’s “The Screensavers,” hosted by Leo LaPorte.
Melanie has also started listening to The Word Nerds podcast, which I would like to listen to as well, except, as you can see, I don’t have any time to listen to yet another podcast.

Plus I do two shows myself. (refraining from shameless plug)
Hey Dom! If you use iTunes for your podcasts, you can catch up on daily podcasts by clicking on the little black triangle next to the podcast’s name. That will generate a list of the podcasts produced by that source thus far and so you can see what you’ve missed.
Oh I know, it’s the time crunch that’s the problem.
EWTN has a page within iTunes podcasting where you can download their best programs free of charge. The Journey Home with Marcus Grodi and Mother Angelica Live are both excellent. Since I don’t get EWTN where I live, downloading is a great way to enjoy this wonderful Catholic programming.
I knew you were going to say that!
Must stink to have no commute… lol!
There is a ton of downloadable audio files on the EWTN website (not really podcasts but what the heck!)…

So many of Father Groeschel’s programs are there. He’s wonderful.
