Hosting blasphemy in the church basement

Ah, San Francisco, the archdiocese by the bay, where blatant disregard for the Church’s teachings on sexual morality aren’t just winked at, but rewarded with the highest offices in the chancery. Last year, I noted that Most Holy Redeemer Parish was voted most gay friendly by a local newspaper and the pastor, Fr. Stephen Meriwether was quoted approving it. He was also quoted as disparaging Pope Benedict who elevated to the second-highest post at the Vatican Cardinal William Levada, the man who appointed Meriwether as pastor and chancellor. Strange, no?

The same pastor and parish were enthusiastic supporters of San Francisco’s Gay Pride parade, a bacchanalian display that included the notorious anti-Catholic group of transvestites, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Now, it turns out that the parish’s connection to the group is more than just incidental, according to the following posted on Mark Shea’s blog:

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence now use Most Holy Redeemer Parish Hall (beneath the church) for their monthly Revival Bingo.

Here’s the listing for the next event. (scroll down to graphic)

Here’s an article describing the fun, including prizes of porn dvd’s and sex toys.

Here’s the Sisters’ own description with graphics.

And here’s some info on “Peaches Christ”, guest host for the “Bare Chest Bingo” event on November 2nd. (Read her/his bio, s/he is a direct descendant of Christ)

All to take place in the same building where the Body of Christ is reserved.

The pastor is the chancellor of the archdiocese, Fr. Stephen Meriwether.

Maybe someone should ask Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco how this could be tolerated. Or perhaps Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio in Washington. Or even Meriwether’s former ordinary, Cardinal Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

  • Why are you so sure the Pope and the nuncio know about this? I’m so tired of the doom-and-gloomers who greet every problem as if it were a signal of the apocalypse and they’re ready to jump into the volcano.

Instead of just assuming that all is lost, why not do something about it, like write to the archbishop, the nuncio, and the Pope. Or if you don’t want to do that, then work to make your own parish holy.

But the Chicken Little act is wearing thin. Maybe I do more harm than good posting this stuff.

  • Considering that Levada is head of the CDF, I suspect that the Pope knows about this.  It’s not exactly something new.  I also hope that he plans to do something about it, but expect it will not be something dramatic that will cause confrontation.  His style seems to be much more subtle.

Not to pick on Carrie, but this is the sort of attitude that drives me bananas.

    “I suspect..” “I expect…”

    Just tell them!

    Dom:

Maybe I do more harm than good posting this stuff.

I don’t think you are. Especially when you actually suggest that people contact the proper authorities. I agree that the “sky is falling” stuff is getting old.

  • Kelly, what makes you think that the people with the power will actually see something written to them by one of the laity?

I believe that Three Divine Persons in One will see it.

Personally I believe far more is accomplished by making the information public in a forum that a lot of people pay attention to.  Like this one, for instance.

Sorry, but with all due respect to Dom’s readership base, you folks are talking to yourselves.

  • In fact, we have been abandoned by the only One who really counts.

God is not in the abandoning business. Some of His creatures might abandon Him, but not the other way around. Repeat: God does not abandon.

What I meant is—and reading what I wrote, I believe it’s very clear but let me say it again—God is very much aware of the efforts people take to bring abuses to Church leadership’s attention. If we try our best and are ignored, God isn’t going to fault us. He’s not going to say “hey, Archbishop So-and-So didn’t even read your letter, you loser.”

Do your best with the gifts God has given you. There’s only one Messiah and we’re not Him.

Wilma, I’m sure you feel you’re doing the Lord’s work, but I’m a Roman Catholic and you’re not going to make me stray from what is the one true Faith. And I’d appreciate it greatly if you’d refrain from defining Roman Catholic teachings as “false,” thank you very much and may God bless you.

  • YOU are to LEAVE.

    Uh-uh, babe.

I’m not the blog owner here, but if I were, I’d say YOU are.

God bless and don’t let the door hit ya.
