Teachers suing the archdiocese

Teachers’ union representing Catholic high school teachers are suing the Archdiocese of Boston. They say that a plan to spin off eight regional high schools as independent is just cover for union-busting. The union says the archdiocese told them that the schools won’t have to honor collective bargaining agreements and that the teachers could re-apply for the jobs as individuals. Sounds fishy to me.

I wonder what kind of “considerable oversight” the unions are claiming the archdiocese will have. It may be just as simple as retaining the normal Catholic responsibility for making sure that what is taught is in line with Catholic teaching. On the other hand, I’d be disappointed if it is the archdiocese just trying to get out of an agreement. I don’t think that’s the case, based on conversations with people. From what they tell me, the archdiocese can’t afford to subsidize the schools like they used to, and the schools are going to have make it on their own.
